Chancey Lego Robotics Camp

Jan-Mar 2018
The Chancey Lego Robotics Camp was an after school program at Chancey Elementary. The camp was held on a weekly basis for two months and serviced 24 students, grades four through five with a focus on underrepresented groups in STEM. The camp was of no cost to the students and was fully supported through donations, volunteering, and funding by Winner's Circle Robotics.
The camp offered quality exposure to science and engineering principles through hands-on work with the Lego EV3 Robotics system. The camp provided an introductory level robotics training including work on basic mechanisms, design, construction, and programming with a focus on design thinking.  The curriculum included weekly lessons followed by challenges where students will be able to apply and implement principles introduced during the lesson. Design challenges included manuring a maze, flipping "light switches", designing a Lego Roomba, picking up and sorting colored blocks, following colored lines, traversing an obstacle course. The curriculum was designed to mimic the experience of a small FLL team and the camp concluded with a brief feature on the FIRST program. Because of their exposure, and the interest by the school administration, Chancey Elementary plans to start its own FLL Junior team in the fall of 2018, with help from WCRJ.
Thank you to Ms. Cheryl Mahan and Ms. Ronda Cosby.
